HCC Central Drama presented John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men in HCC Central's Theatre One, 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, February 26th - 28th and March 5th - 7th.
John Steinbeck's stage adaptation of his novel tells a gritty and poignant tale of George and Lennie, migrant farm hands struggling for a just little dignity and freedom in Depression era California.
Lennie, a childlike giant of a man, is devoted to George who often struggles to keep his hapless friend out of trouble. It's a hardscrabble life but the two are fired by their ambition to buy a little farm of their own. When they find decent jobs on a ranch, the dream seems almost within reach. Things come apart when the rancher's flirtatious daughter-in-law excites Lennie's passion for stroking soft, pretty things. In the aftermath George faces a heartbreaking dilemma. What can he do to help this man-child who trusts him with his life?
Declared a classic at its debut in1937, Of Mice and Men is still, 77 years later, required reading in schools across the country, and is as always a favorite target of censors. The profanity that colors the language of the ranch hands has won it 4th place on the American Library Association's long list of challenged books.
