Tuesday, August 25th through Wednesday, September 23rd
Reception, Tuesday, September 1 from 5:30 - 7:30 Houston’s famous disregard for its own history is challenged in HCC Central Gallery exhibit, With The Grain opening Tuesday, August 25th. The eight artists in this exhibit present new works inspired by fragments of wood salvaged from the old buildings torn down in Houston on almost a daily basis. The artists include Raina Chamberlain, Dan Havel, Edward Lane McCartney, Alex Larsen, Jessie Lott, Page Piland, Patrick Renner and Dean Ruck. These artists, like the woodworkers, carpenters, and architects who came before them, study the grain of the wood they choose to incorporate into their work. The size, color, and shape of the wood too plays a role in creating works of art that repurpose and recontextualize the materials. In much the same way that the rings of a cut tree reveal its age and history, these new works reveal the history of Houston, even as its historic homes and structures are razed. The show runs Tuesday, August 25th through Wednesday, September 23rd.
The Art Gallery at HCC-Central is in the Fine Arts Center located at 3517 Austin St, Houston, TX 77004. Please call 713-718-6600 for information.
