The
purpose of this presentation is to illustrate the importance of team
teaching to transform international students into independent learners,
along with strategies concerning team teaching. Primarily, ESL students
come from a sheltered learning environment where they are accustomed to
reproducing what their teachers tell them. It is important to guide
students to acculturate into the American educational system. The co-req
teacher has a significant role in “translating” the system into
something the students can handle until they are able to continue on
their own. This session focuses on team-teaching; however, the topic of
preparing English-language learners to be successful in American higher
education is relevant to faculty who may not be team-teaching a
corequisite course.
